CloudfloorDNS: Leveraging IT Alerting to Streamline Notifications and Reduce Downtime

This is a guest blog post by Eric McIntyre of CloudfloorDNS Here at CloudfloorDNS we take downtime seriously since any outage or slowdown on our DNS Networks can disrupt many thousands of customers. In an effort to help reduce the downtime on our DNS, API’s and other integrated platforms, we utilize several monitoring solutions including our own Cloudfloor Netmon Server monitoring. All of these APM services (Application and Performance Monitoring) do a great job at alerting our engineers via email and SMS message if something goes wrong, but one thing that is lacking is granularity for employee scheduling and other methods of alerting via multiple methods such as a voice message via phone, email, and SMS to make sure the right person gets the right messages at the right time.

Everbridge IT Alerting to the rescue

In an effort to streamline our notification and reduce downtime, we looked around at various options and finally decided to utilize the Everbridge IT Alerting platform. We selected Everbridge for a few main reasons – Multi-Modal multi-modal notifications, employee scheduling and ease of integration.
Before the IT Alerting integration our team of network engineers were receiving email and SMS alerts even if they were not on call or possibly even away on vacation. Not ideal, but our platform didn’t have the ability to determine who was on call, vacation, in the office or away on business. This “blanket” notification disrupted sleep, vacations, business meetings and added more cooks to the kitchen than required.
Setting up our integration through email ingestion

Setting up our integration through email ingestion.”

Integration of the Everbridge IT Alerting platform was a breeze using the email ingestion option instead of implementing their fully restful API. This saved us may engineering hours and helped us get the IT Alerting platform into production within a few days instead of a few weeks. Since our notification emails are formatted with all the relevant data, we simply had to setup the Everbridge email ingestion to get a copy of our notification emails, and then the platform strips out the relevant information and disseminates it through the platform and notifies the right individuals at the right time and will keep sending these notifications until the engineers on duty confirm receipt. The integrated scheduling helps reduce noise and blanket notifications and only involved the proper individuals and engineering teams based on the nature and impact of the outage
Implementing the Everbridge IT Alerting platform has helped us reduce our downtime by streamlining our alerts and notifications all while getting the information to the right people at the right time.

*In full disclosure, CloudfloorDNS is a wholly owned subsidiary of Everbridge and although we implemented the service at no charge our decision to select Everbridge ITA was based on a number of factors including ease of integration, mulit-modal communications, confirmation of alerts as well as the flexibility of the notification service.
